For you to learn guitar, you need to keep your guitar in tune. When you are still starting out, finding a person to tune the guitar for you is fine. We can’t blame you since it’s quite hard to tune guitars. The problem arises if you are now on your own practicing and suddenly you got an out of tune string. It certainly affects your practice. This is why you need to at, least start, learning how tune guitar as early as possible. Luckily, we have some tips that work for you.
Tune through comparison
You can tune guitar by comparing it with other musical instruments, especially those that doesn’t go off tune. This is one of the easiest tuning techniques that also help you to learn the dynamics of tuning. A standard tuning goes through the notes EADGBE in which starts from the lower string. You simply compare it from another device, let’s say piano or an organ and follow each of the note as it sounds. Tune slowly and take your time. This process is hard at first but with consistent practice, you’ll easily learn it and tune your guitar well. As added bonus, you familiarize how the right tuning key sounds.
Tune through tuning devices
This is the cheat way to tune guitars, you simply plug in a tuning device and tune the guitar with the standard tuning or whatever tuning you like. Common tuning device are those battery powered chromatic tuner, some foot stomp pedals and common multi-effects have tuning devices built in them.
I mentioned that it’s a cheat way to tune, well it’s actually fine when you are on a gig and you don’t want people catching you tuning your guitar (which is by the way irritating) you simply use the tuner and turn off the amp or mute the chain. However, for learning, tuning devices will lag you down. If you want to know how to truly tune, then refrain from using tuning devices.
Tune without basis
The last type of tuning is tuning without basis. On the 6th string (upper most string), you hit the fifth fret and it should sound the same with the open fifth 5th string. You do this the same with the 5th and 4th string clipping the fifth fret and so on until your reach the 3rd string where you move to the fourth fret and tune the 2nd string along with it. You then go back to the fifth fret of the 2nd string when tuning the 1st string. You did not base in any key but this allows you to play the guitar fine since the tune is congruent to the standard tuning. Therefore, it could be a flat E or sharp, but it will sound fine when played with chords.
